Description:

A new method is presented for the determination of phosphorus in gasoline using flameless atomic absorption. Lanthanum nitrate solution is inserted in a graphite furnace prior to direct addition of gasoline. The organic matrix is charred prior to atomization of the phosphorus. The sensitivity of this method is 20 ng of phosphorus per 90-microliters aliquot of gasoline. Repeated analysis of NBS triphenyl phosphate standard at the 80-ng level resulted in 2% relative standard deviation. Each determination requires less than 2 min.
