Approximately 63,000 chemicals are found in our foods, drugs, consumer products and envrionment (11). here is proof that human exposure to some of these chemicals can have carcinogenic, teratogenic and mutagenic effects (11,5,14). overnment agencies and industry have developed a variety of tests to target these potential health risks. ecause mutations, i.e. alterations in the genetic material of somatic cells, can result in cancer and malignancies, attempts have been made to identify carcinogens on the basis of their mutagenic activity (1). utagenic events include chromosomal aneuploidy, chromosomal aberrations and point or gene mutations.
