Description:
A research project was conducted to determine the feasibility of applying the magnesium oxide (MgO) scrubbing system to smelter off-gas streams containing approximately one percent SO2. Pilot scale (4000 cu Nm/hr) tests of the MgO system using a packed tower absorber with no regeneration of the MgO solids were conducted at Molycorp, Inc.'s molybdenum roaster. During the test program, process parameters were varied to observe their effect on SO2 removal, and data collected were correlated in a design equation.
