Citation:

COMPENDIUM ON SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT BY VERMICOMPOSTING. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, D.C., EPA/600/8-80/033 (NTIS PB81109696), 1980.

Description:

Vermicomposting of municipal solid wastes has been attempted only in the last five years and there are presently no full-scale operations. This report assesses the technical and economic feasibility of vermicomposting and is based on several pilot-scale studies conducted by private entrepreneurs. The assessment is based on examining facilities and costs for a municipal operation serving (1) a community of 50,000 persons and (2) a community of about 500,000 persons. Vermicomposting is compared to three other methods of solid waste management: sanitary landfill, windrow composting, and combustion. Vermicomposting was estimated to cost about $24 to $32 per ton of waste processed.
