ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPACT OF RESOURCE RECOVERY ON THE ENVIRONMENT

Description:

This assessment of the environmental impact of resource recovery examines the environmental effects that will derive from municipal solid waste disposal in 1990 and the changes in these effects that will result from implementation of resource recovery from municipal solid waste. The environmental effects considered in this study are the direct effects of municipal solid waste disposal as well as the secondary effects of substituting materials recovered from municipal solid waste for raw materials in the production of steel, aluminum, glass, and energy. The energy aspects of resource recovery--that is, energy conservation resulting from use of recovered scrap in materials production and energy production by recovery of energy from municipal solid waste--are also evaluated. The analysis is based on specific scenarios for municipal solid waste disposal in 1990 without and with implementation of resource recovery.
