Description:

The report gives results of an investigation of the collection efficiencies of the popularly used media in the SASS train impinger assembly. A simple mercury-vapor generator system, based on saturation of air with mercury vapor at a fixed temperature, was assembled. Performance evaluation of the system indicates that stable atmospheres of mercury can be generated with the equilibration temperatures controlled by Graham condensers. By repeated sampling and analysis of the generated atmospheres and by calibration of an on-line atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS), the absorbance readings can be converted directly into mercury concentrations; i.e., micrograms per cubic meter. Sample storage stability and field use tests appear to be the next steps in validating the acidified medium as being acceptable for use in the SASS train system.
