Description:
The objectives of the study were to determine the incidence of antibiotic resistance among coliform bacteria in a secondary waste-water treatment facility and to determine whether various alternative disinfection procedures would select for or against antibiotic resistant coliforms. The disinfectants tested (chlorine, ozone, and ultraviolet light) resulted in significant decreases both in antibiotic-sensitive coliforms. No dramatic selection for antibiotic-resistant types was apparent during disinfection with any of the processes.
