Description:

Nonpoint sources are significant contributors of pollutants to receiving waters and quantification of their impact is a difficult task. Evaluation of these pollutants requires a tool capable of simulating the hydrologic cycle in a river basin. The Hydrologic Simulation Program--FORTRAN (HSPF) is designed to meet this need. This paper examines the development of HSPF from two perspectives--the research involved in developing its simulation algorithms and the software concepts used in implementing these algorithms. Two applications in urban hydrology and water quality assessment are discussed.
