The Chesapeake Bay Program in conjunction with Maryland Department of the Environment /Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality has conducted benthic sampling, sediment and bottom water analysis. Available datasets include: 1) Maryland Benthic Count, Biomass, and Sediment and Bottom Water Analyses Files (and Related Event Files) containing data collected at fixed sampling stations in the upper Chesapeake Bay, Maryland tributaries and the Potomac River since July 1984. Count, sediment and water quality data through June 1993 and biomass data for 1988 to June 1992 are available. Files included detailed taxonomic identifications and counts of species, determination of sample biomass, sediment analysis and hydrographic profiles. Sampling is conducted on a schedule separate from the water quality surveys. The protocol has changed for selection of sampling stations, collection gear and methods of biomass analysis over the ten years of the monitoring program. Please see the Data Documentation for details. 2) Virginia Benthic Count, Biomass, and Sediment and Bottom Water Analyses Files (and Related Event Files) containing data collected at fixed sampling station in the lower Chesapeake Bay and its Virginia tributaries from July 1985 through December of 1995. The Elizabeth River monitoring data were collected from January 1989 to December 1995. Locations of the sampling stations deviate slightly from those in water quality and plankton monitoring program. Sampling is done quarterly and separate from the regular water quality surveys. The files include detailed taxonomic identifications and counts of species, biomass determinations, sediment analysis and hydrographic profiles.
