Description:

Fewer than 10 males of the only known vertebrate selfing hermaphrodite, the killifish Rivulus marmoratus, have previously been collected in natural populations scattered from southeast Brazil to Florida. ecent collections (1988-89) from small islands (cays) off the coast of Belize included an unprecedented 10 - 25% of males among 230 specimens. he males court and engage in spawning embraces with hermaphrodites; their gonads contain mature sperm and there is no evidence of ovarian tissue. he role of males in nature populations is not understood. f they do occasionally fertilize eggs, then they can be important agents of recombination among the homozygous clones which make up natural populations of this species.
