Mitchum, R. AND S. Pyle. APPLICATION OF GC/ITD (GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY/ION TRAP DETECTOR) TO ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS (JOURNAL VERSION). U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, D.C., EPA/600/J-88/059 (NTIS PB89103162).

Description:

The choice of gas chromatography (GC) detectors has expanded rapidly. The necessity for mass spectrometric (MS) characterization of GC effluents stems from the complexity of the matrices associated with environmental samples. There are currently several MS types being used in conjunction with GC. These include magnetic sector analyzers, quadrupole ion trap and ion cyclotron resonance (ICR) mass spectrometers. The paper is concerned with the application of the ion trap MS detector (ITD) to environmental analysis. The GC/ITD has provided representative mass spectra for the analysis of purge-and-trap volatiles and hazardous waste steam distillate. The ability to obtain library matchable EI spectra on a routine basis indicated that the ITD technique can successfully analyze environmental samples.
