Description:
The feasibility of recycling certain categories of water used in the manufacture of airplanes was demonstrated. Water in four categories was continuously recycled in 380-liter (100-gallon) treatment plants; chemical process rinse water, dye-penetrant crack-detection rinse water, electroplating process rinse water containing cyanides, and machine shop water-based coolant. The estimated capital cost was $3.4 million for equipment to recycle the above categories of water in a typical, medium-sized airplane factory generating 1.5 Ml (400,000 gal)/day. Recycling costs were estimated to be: $0.94/kl ($3.57/1000 gal) for chemical process rinse water; $1.65/kl ($6.25/1000 gal) for dye penetrant rinse water; $4.36/kl ($16.50/1000 gal) for cyanide process rinse water; and $12.18/kl ($46.09/1000 gal) for machine shop coolant.
