STUDY OF OPERATIONAL ULTRAVIOLET DISINFECTION EQUIPMENT AT SECONDARY TREATMENT PLANTS

Citation:

White, S., E. Jernigan, AND A. Venosa. STUDY OF OPERATIONAL ULTRAVIOLET DISINFECTION EQUIPMENT AT SECONDARY TREATMENT PLANTS. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, D.C., EPA/600/J-86/141.

Description:

Over 120 facilities in the U.S. and Canada were surveyed to identify operational status and characteristics such as flowrates, equipment manufacturers, and upstream treatment processes. Six of these facilities were then selected for on-site inspections. The objective of the site visits was to determine the factors that contributed to the success or failure of UV disinfection. Each plant was inspected and its performance data were reviewed. The evaluation concluded that UV disinfection equipment design has been the key to technology effectiveness and that manufacturers' design continue to evolve rapidly. Electrical and mechanical difficulties often affected performance adversely.
