Gutknecht, W., R. Jayanty, AND J. Bursey. GUIDELINES FOR DETERMINATION OF LABORATORY ACCEPTABILITY FOR ANALYSIS OF VOLATILE ORGANIC POLLUTANTS COLLECTED ON TENAX GC (TRADE NAME) ADSORBENT. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, D.C., EPA/600/4-84/035.

Description:

A Technical Assistant Document (TAD) has been prepared which is intended to serve as a guide to those persons responsible for evaluating and/or selecting a laboratory to perform sampling and analysis of airborne, organic pollutants using Tenax GCR polymer and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, respectively. The document has two principle parts. The first is a general discussion of the Tenax GCR and GC/MS techniques. Included in this discussion are (1) preparation of Tenax GCR sampling cartridges, (2) sampling with these cartridges, (3) analyte recovery using thermal desorption and (4) qualitative and quantitative analysis using GC/MS. Also included is a general description of a quality assurance program for this analytical effort. The second principal part of this document provides procedures for evaluating a laboratory's capabilities to utilize the Tenax GCR and GC/MS methods in an acceptable manner. Included are general guidelines for preparation and use of performance evaluation samples and a questionnaire to perform a laboratory system's audit. The techniques presented should also apply to sampling for organic compounds in general using other solid adsorbents.
