Description:

Two experimental plots were instrumented with erosion pins to study the correspondence between point erosion and erosion over an area on strip mine soil. Using a rotating boom rainfall simulator, data were collected by sampling the runoff every five minutes for the duration of the rainfall. The amount of sediment eroded or deposited was measured after each simulated rainfall using erosion pins. These results were compared to the sediment load measured by runoff sampling, as well as to the predicted erosion using two analytical models, the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) and an Erosion/Deposition (E/D) model. The E/D model was developed to be a more comprehensive model than the USLE, by including partial area concepts of more comprehensive model than the USLE, by including partial area concepts of hydrology and sediment transport equations.
