Description:

A study of alternative biological phosphorus (bio-P) removal processes was undertaken to evaluate their effectiveness and reliability. Thirty such facilities were identified in the United States and Canada. Four plants were selected for detailed study. The PhoStrip process is used at Lansdale, Pennsylvania and Savage, Maryland and operationally modified activated sludge processes are used in Lake Buena Vista, Florida and DePere, Wisconsin. These four facilities were found to be capable of achieving effluent total phosphorus concentrations of 1 mg/l or less without tertiary treatment.
