TOXICS RELEASE INVENTORY - GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM COVERAGE FILES

Description:

Data extracted from the EPA Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) system for reporting year 1993 are written in Arc/INFO geographic information system (GIS) export file format (an ASCII data exchange format). The data are also summarized in tables out of the TRI public data release publication (EPA 745-R-94-001), and are written in Lotus spreadsheet format. The files contain TRI data organized by state which include: facility identification, facility location coordinates which have been reviewed and expanded to identify preferred geographic coordinates, year-by-year releases and transfers by medium, quantities in waste, and methods used to identify source reduction activity. When imported to a GIS, the combined set of coverage attributes, facility information, and tabular data for 1993 totals up to seventy-two files per state. Please refer to the file listing and coverage documentation file for more information. The United States Toxics release Inventory (TRI) is mandated by Under section 313 of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) of 1986, certain manufacturers must report on an annual basis the amounts of over 300 toxic chemicals, including those in 20 chemical categories, which are released directly to the air, water or land, or which are injected underground. The reports also include information on amounts transferred to off-site locations for treatment or disposal. The law further specifies that the EPA must compile these reports into an annual inventory that is publicly available by computer telecommunications and other means on a cost-reimbursable basis. COVERAGE: USA; including American Samoa, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. These data are not projected.
