Description:

An automated system for the quantitative determination of dissolved metals such as Fe, Cu, Zn, Ca, Co, Ni, Cr, Hg, Se, and Pb in water is described. The system collects a water sample, preconcentrates the dissolved metals with ion-exchange paper automatically in a sample collection and preparation module (SCPM) controlled by a microprocessor computer, and then quantitates the metals with an energy-dispersive x-ray spectrophotometer. It has been demonstrated in the laboratory that the system can automatically and simultaneously quantitate dissolved multi-element metal ions in water in the concentration range of parts per million to parts per billion.
