Alternative Disinfection Devices – UV Light Disinfection of Surfaces with SARS-CoV-2

Citation:

Oudejans, L. AND K. Ratliff. Alternative Disinfection Devices – UV Light Disinfection of Surfaces with SARS-CoV-2. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC, EPA/600/S-20/442, 2020.

Impact/Purpose:

The global COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted public transportation with a significant reduction in ridership. In order to prepare for a safe return, transportation agencies have implemented intense cleaning procedures relying on the EPA List N of approved disinfectants. Alternative disinfection approaches, such as ultraviolet (UV) light, are being considered to complement routine cleaning and disinfection practices. This summary provides interim data on disinfection efficacy of a pulsed xenon UV light source against SARS-CoV-2 as well as Phi6 and MS2, two potential viral surrogates for SARS-CoV-2. The interim data is being made available to inform both the public transit agencies and the general public about the potential efficacy of UV light as part of routine cleaning and disinfection practices.

Description:

Data report on UV disinfection results of materials contaminated with SARS-CoV-2 or two potential surrogates thereof. Data report is intended for publication on the ORD CoVID -19 environmental research webpage
