Description:

The Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP) is a joint effort of the Office of Modeling Monitoring Systems and Quality Assurance and the Office of Environmental Province and Effects Research within the Office of Research and Development. EMAP is a long-term interagency commitment to monitor the nation's ecological resources. n important stop in implementing EMAP involves conducting regional demonstration projects. his document, the 1990 Virginian Province Demonstration Project, in the estuaries of the mid-Atlantic states was the first such demonstration of EMAP. he 1990 project involved 500 sampling visits to 217 estuarine and near shore sites from Cape Cod to the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. he preliminary assessment of the environmental condition of the Virginian Province identified differences in the extent of environmental degradation among specific habitats and classes of estuaries that should be of great interest to resource managers. n addition, the methodology, MAP is also developing Reports covering other Demonstration Projects for other resource groups and will produce Annual Statistical Summaries from each Resource Group as the program is implemented.
