Description:

The conservation and management of neotropical migratory birds needs to include a landscape perspective. andscape ecology represents a renewed interest in the development and dynamics of landscape mosaics, the effects of landscape patterns on species, biotic interactions and ecological processes, and how landscape heterogeneity can be managed to benefit society. or neotropical migratory birds, landscapes occupy the spatial scales intermediate between an individual's territory or home range and a species, distribution over larger physiographic regions. ecent work has improved the conceptual basis and quantitative methods for landscape studies. owever empirical information for neotropical migratory birds is largely based on short-term, distributional studies in central and northeastern hardwood forests during the breeding season. ore detailed and geographically-extensive landscape studies of neotropical migratory birds during the breeding season are needed to provide regionally-specific information to compare among regions. ore study is also needed during migration and on overwintering areas in the neotropics. omparative studies of neotropical migratory birds across gradients, regions, or larger geographic areas will be particularly important in predicting the impacts of changes in landscape structure in response to global change and its associated human-driven land-use changes.
