NATIONAL GAP ANALYSIS PROGRAM

Citation:

Description:

GAP Analysis is a rapid conservation evaluation method for assessing the current status of biodiversity at large spatial scales. GAP Analysis provides a systematic approach for evaluating the protection afforded biodiversity in given areas. It uses Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to identify gaps in biodiversity protection that may be filled by the establishment of new preserves or changes in land management practices. GAP Analysis works by overlaying maps of land cover and species occurrence onto maps of protected areas, using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. The resulting maps show the relationship between areas of biological significance and the level of protection afforded these areas. One of the strongest features of GAP is its flexibility in utilizing data layers previously developed for other purposes. Also, GAP data can be used in building an environmental information infrastructure. By linking to the National GAP Analysis Program home page, you can search by State and see what types of data are available. Contact information is listed at the State level. Please read the GAP data disclaimer at the beginning of each State link.
