Description:
Call data records (CDR) are data from cellular phone networks that can be used to understand human mobility or where people go spatially. They can be used to estimate visitation to an area such as a coastal access point for a given time window, as well as provide information on the origin of visitors. Methods typical in economic valuation studies collect similar information through surveys of households and on site sampling. CDR have the opportunity to greatly expand the number of observations as well as the geographic and spatial resolution of trip behavior information. This work presents a pilot case for employing CDR to estimate recreational visitation to coastal access points on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. We explain the data structure and calibrate a visitation model to field observations at coastal access points and visitation records at public beaches. In addition, we describe a method to use the information about the origin of the visitors to estimate economic values for coastal recreation.
