Description:

The paper presents preliminary results from the EPA test program having the three following major objectives: (1) collecting data that allow a comparison of metals and organic compound emissions during steady-state and transient incinerator operation; (2) evaluating scrubber removal efficiencies for specific compounds; and, (3) establishing cause and effect relationships between incinerator operating conditions and emissions. The technical approach first involved selection of appropriate test sites. The paper concentrates on the first two sites where preliminary results were available. Both of the first two sites tested have multiple hearth incinerators burning a mixture of primary and secondary sludge. At both sites, tests were performed during steady-state operation and during transient operation.
