Impact/Purpose:

The scientific evidence is growing connecting air pollution to cardiovascular disease. Older adults are a growing proportion of the U.S. population. In 2014, 46 million persons were over 65 and by 2030 the number will reach 74 million or 21 percent of the U.S. population. Heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death for men and women. The Million Hearts campaign is an effort EPA is collaborating with HHS on to raise awareness about preventing heart attacks through preventative steps, including knowing about the air quality index and prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes by 2017.

Description:

The American Society on Aging is an association of professionals in the field of aging including practitioners, educators, administrators, policymakers, researchers and students. Attendees at this session will receive 1.5 Continuing educational credits and will have a better understanding of the scientific evidence regarding air pollution and heart disease and have an understanding of the Air Quality Index and the federal resources available to inform practitioners and elders about environmental health.
