Description:

Absorption of airway liquid, as it moves from the large surface area of distal airways to more central airway surfaces, is considered to be essential for regulation of the depth of airway liquid. The short-circuited excised canine trachea, however, secretes C(-1) and absorbs a lesser amount of Na(+1). The authors conclude that NaCl absorption dominates resting ion translocation in canine bronchi and that liquid absorption probably occurs at these sites in vivo.
