Description:

The objective of the Catano Criteria Pollutant and Acid Aerosol Characterization study was to characterize criteria pollutant and acid aerosol concentrations in the Ward of Catano and adjacent residential areas in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. on-Governmental organizations (NGO's) have been blaming emissions from local industrial facilities for health problems in school children. his characterization study was initiated in response to a request for assistance from Region II of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. easurements of ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and suspended particles less than 10 microns aerodynamic diameter were conducted over the period of June 1 through September 30, 1994. ver the same period, measurements of particle and gaseous acidity were also conducted using sampling techniques developed by the Harvard School of Public Health. ll pollutant measurements were either below the National Ambient Air Quality Standards or, where standards were absent, concentrations were well below those observed in urban areas in the continental United States. riteria pollutants and their sources, as emitted at the observed levels, are not of concern in relation to adverse health effects observed in the Catano Ward. cidic particles and gases were very low, generally near the limits of detection. cid particles and gases, as observed during the study period, are not of concern in relation to adverse health effects observed in the Catano Ward. etection of pollutants during the study was usually associated with wind directions which aligned with pollutant point sources in the general area or with traffic in the San Juan metropolitan area.
