Description:

Generation of accurate ambient air VOC pollutant mcasurement dataas a base for regulatory decisions is critical. umerous methodsand procedures for sampling and analysis are available from avariety of sources. ir methods available through theEnvironmental Protection Agency are contained in the "Compendium ofMethods for the Determination of Toxic Organic Compounds in AmbientAir". ome of the methods in this Compendium are developed andvalidated only in a single laboratory. ome of the Compendiummethods represent a synthesis of the procedures performed in anumber of laboratories. he range of applicability of the methodsis defined only in general outline, with very little specific dataavailable to assess the performance of the total methodology for alarge number of compounds. here are many criteria which must beconsidered in the selection of methodology for ambinet air samplingand analysis. oth canisters and sorbents may be used for VolatileOrganic Compounds. oth approaches have strengths and weaknesses. There is considerable latitude regarding selection of analyticalmethodology: ass spectrometry, high performance liquidchromatography, and gas chromatography with a variety of detectorsare used at various times for various reasons. ven the exact typeof measurement to be taken will vary according to program needs andthe ultimate use of the data. he quality of the air measurementdata is also a function of the skill, competence, and experience ofboth the field study collection team and the laboratory which isexecuting the methodology.
