Impact/Purpose:

This is an abstract proposing a presentation at the AWMA Air Measurements meeting in March, 2016. The presentation will cover the performance of the rooftop version of the Village Green system that is located in Hong Kong.

Description:

Emerging air pollution measurement technologies that require minimal infrastructure to deploy may lead to new insights on air pollution spatial variability in urban areas. Through a collaboration between the USEPA and HKEPD, this study evaluates the performance of a compact, rooftop variation of the Village Green Project (VGP) air monitor, which is a solar-powered station measuring ozone, fine particulate matter, wind speed and direction, temperature, and humidity at a one-minute resolution. The non-regulatory system utilizes a UV-absorbance measurement for ozone and light-scattering based measurement for PM2.5, both of which receive quality checks by an operator every three months. The solar-powered system was located on a secondary school rooftop on Hong Kong Island in March 2015. The system wirelessly reported data every minute using a low cost radio transmitter (XBee) to a communications base station, which relayed data to a CityU server using cellular communication. This presentation will report a comparison of the VGP-Hong Kong station’s data with nearby HKEPD regulatory data (Eastern station), as well as assess the stability of the system to operate over a sustained period of time, under adverse weather conditions, and over a wide range of ozone and PM2.5 concentrations. Preliminary review of the VG-HK data (~2900 hours of PM2.5 data, ~2400 hours of ozone data) indicate good correlation between the VGP-HK station and HKEPD-Eastern station.
