The GLIMPSE project: Exploring strategies for meeting energy, environmental and climate objectives

Citation:

Loughlin, Dan, Chris Nolte, W. Shi, Y. Ou, S. Smith, AND C. Ledna. The GLIMPSE project: Exploring strategies for meeting energy, environmental and climate objectives. Presented at Seminars: Tsinghua University, Shanghai Academy of Environmental Studies, Beijing and Shanghai, CHINA, June 10 - 13, 2016.

Impact/Purpose:

In this presentation, Dr. Loughlin describes an emerging computational framework being developed in a partnership between the U.S. EPA and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The goal of the framework is to allow researchers to explore technological pathways and management strategies for simultaneously meeting environmental, air quality and climate objectives. The project may serve as a template for similar efforts within China.

Description:

Many of Chinas cities are struggling with high levels of air pollution. At the same time, Chinese planners are seeking to meet growing demands for energy in a manner that meets climate goals. In this presentation, Dr. Loughlin describes the linkages between energy, the environment and climate. He then presents the GLIMPSE decision support framework. This prototype system will allow researchers in the U.S. to examine technology pathways for meeting environmental, climate and energy goals simultaneously. Several examples applications of GLIMPSE are provided. In the first, two air quality management strategies are examined. While the air pollutant reductions are similar between the strategies, greenhouse gas reduction co-benefits for one are much greater. In the second example application, Dr. Loughlin demonstrates how the system can be used to evaluate the air quality co-benefits of a greenhouse gas mitigation pathway. The presentation concludes with a discussion of future directions, including potential integration of components of GLIMPSE into the Air Benefits and Costs Assessment System (ABaCAS) framework.
