Stormwater and Wastewater Infrastructure Monitoring Test Bed

Citation:

Murray, Dan AND R. Kertesz. Stormwater and Wastewater Infrastructure Monitoring Test Bed. To be Presented at 2014 Confluence Water Conference, Highland Heights, KY, May 14, 2014.

Impact/Purpose:

To present the details of the design and fabrication of the Stormwater and Wastewater Infrastructure Monitoring Test Bed.

Description:

The growing application of stormwater and wastewater management in urban and urbanizing environments is increasing the demand for monitoring technologies and systems that can provide reliable performance data, in real-time or near real-time, for operation and maintenance decision-making. At the same time, in-network treatment technologies such as end-of-pipe filtration units or catch basin filters are being installed in increasing number. Careful quantification of performance is instrumental in (a) selecting proper monitoring technologies and/or (b) evaluating the performance of treatment technologies. The authors have constructed a highly accurate and precise dynamic flow generation system that avails independently regulated pumping and highly accurate scientific-grade flow monitoring to reliably reproduce flows ranging from low flow (<30 gallons per minute - gpm) to very high flows (>1500 gpm). The testing device was designed and fabricated for both steady state and dynamic operation and is designed for flexibility. It can be operated in recirculation or single-pass mode, which allows for doping (particle addition, nutrient addition, etc) to simulate various wet or dry weather flow scenarios (e.g. first flush vs flow weighted analyses). The system is flexible, such that pipe dimensions and manhole dimensions can be adjusted or the manhole can be replaced with a custom infrastructure. In addition, internet connectivity allows the system to provide feedback into SCADA systems or other remote monitoring and control equipment.
