Description:

The quantification of uncertainty in long-range transport model predictions and the implications of these uncertainties on formulations of control policy have been the subject of investigations by both the United States and Canada. To more fully address these topics, the American Meteorological Society (AMS) was requested to convene a workshop in September 1984 at the National Academy of Sciences Study Center in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Joint sponsorship was provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Canada, and the Atmospheric Environment Service of Environment Canada. The AMS workshop was three and one-half days in duration and involved participation by 38 scientists from the United States, Canada, and Europe. Five invited draft chapters were prepared prior to the workshop to provide a focus for discussion, i.e., to raise the pertinent scientific issues to be addressed by the participants. This AMS publication contains the complete documentation of the workshop including the five invited chapters, recent developments in model evaluation and sensitivity analysis, and the reports of the Eulerian and Lagrangian working groups.
