Description:
Discrepancies between estimates obtained from longitudinal studies analyzed cross-sectionally and longitudinally pose questions about the validity of cross-sectional estimates of change. n some cases these discrepancies are the result of period effects, cohort effects, or selective dropout. hese and other points are illustrated by analysis of the relation between aging and pulmonary function in middle and old age using data from a large, prospective, longitudinal study. ttention to these potential problems helps in choosing a study design, and can provide an important tool for design and analysis of future studies.
