Description:

The hepatotoxicity of carbon tetrachloride and chloroform in rats is increased when exposure occurs during the dark part of the lighting cycle when rats are more active. ats are used as surrogates for humans in toxicology, but have opposite activity patterns, with humans being active during the day than the night. s most rat data is from chemical exposure during the inactive part of their diurnal cycle, rat vs. human differences in activity patterns may affect the accuracy of experimental animal to human extrapolation. his manuscript describes alterations in blood flow that occur during the diurnal cycle of the rat. esearch such as this may provide mechanistic clues to the cause(s) of diurnal variations in toxicity.
