The editorial explores the role of the pathobiologist and problems encountered in estuarine/marine ecological investigations. Four areas are proposed for cooperative endeavor with scientists in other fields: (1) toxicological pathology in aquatic species; (2) pathophysiology of estuarine/marine species; (3) virology of estuarine/marine species; (4) development of models and paradigms among estuarine and marine organisms to study function and dysfunction of organismic systems.
