Description:

The pig hos been proposed as a potential animal model for methanol-induced neuro-ocular toxicosis in humans because of its reported low liver tetrahydro folate levels and therefore, slower formate metabolism as compared to humans. o determine the validity of the animal model, minipigs were given a single oral dose of methanol or water. ose-dependent signs developed including mild CNS depression, tremers, and ataxia, however, these subjects failed to develop optic nerve lesions, toxicologically-significant formate accumulation or metabolic acidosis. ethanol and formate pharmacokinetics are also discussed.
