Novel measurement technologies for ambient and combustion source aerosols

Citation:

Hays, M. Novel measurement technologies for ambient and combustion source aerosols. To be Presented at Helmholtz Zentrum International Workshop, MunichG, March 16 - 20, 2015.

Impact/Purpose:

The invited presentation will describe innovative EPA methods and chemical measurement techniques used to characterize combustion aerosol emissions, provide exposure-related dosimetry information, and report on advances regarding particulate matter PM substituents by size, all of which are important to improving air quality and combating climate change, visibility and human health effects. The workshop directly addresses EPA research priorities for airborne PM as described by the National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academies of Science (NAS).

Description:

Thie presentaiton examines the chemical properties of atmospheric and combustion source aerosols. It describes the aerosol chemical fractions and the specific chemical constituents in these aerosols. The presentation will cover (i) the limitatins and benefits of hyphenated chromatography technologies, (ii) introduce the possibility of a thermodynamics-based toxicology model, and (iii) physiological-based extractions for the determination of organic compound bioavailability.
