Impact/Purpose:

The purpose of the Behavioral/Social Sciences Scientist-to-Scientist Town Hall Meeting was to develop a behavioral sciences research agenda that aligned with ORD’s research programs.

Description:

Every four to five years, the Office of Research and Development (ORD) gives its Board of Scientific Counselors (BOSC) the task of reviewing its research programs to decide how the National Center for Environmental Research (NCER) can better achieve the scientific needs of the Agency. BOSC made a series of recommendations; specifically one that suggests NCER should better incorporate behavioral and social science (B/SS) priorities in its research portfolio. NCER therefore, hosted a Town Hall Meeting (THM) where B/SS experts discussed ways in which NCER could better improve its research programs by incorporating the priorities seen in the B/SS field. These proceedings recorded the information discussed and produced at the THM. The workshop produced a list of 6 focus areas that could advance ORD’s environmental research through relevant B/SS issues. These areas included the relationship between perceptions, beliefs and attitudes, the role of communication, the status of environmental education, the role of business and other organizations, the governance and community-led engagement, and the economic valuation of environmental policy. Participants then created research questions within each of the focus areas after hearing overview presentations regarding the 6 ORD research programs from the Deputy NPDs.
