Impact/Purpose:
Purpose is to present current status of research to develop methods to characterize emissions from spray polyurethane foam insulation at an ASTM symposium. Objective is to stimulate interaction with stakeholders in discussions of research progress and direction.
Description:
This presentation updates symposium participants re EPA progress towards development of SPF insulation emissions characterization methods. The presentation highlights evaluation of experiments investigating emissions after application of SPF to substrates in micro chambers and in 53 liter stainless steel emissions test chambers. Results demonstrate that micro chambers are useful tools for identifying emissions, for investigating relationships between temperature and emissions, and investigating the time-course of emissions. Apparent batch to batch SPF insulation sample variability suggests that better control of the A side(isocyanate) to B side (polyol resin) chemical ratio may be needed to reduce variability in samples produced using DYI SPF insulation kits for methods development testing.
