Data Validation and Sharing in a Large Research Program

Citation:

Seeliger, C. AND P. Kaufmann. Data Validation and Sharing in a Large Research Program. National Meeting of American Fisheries Society, Portland, OR, August 16 - 20, 2015.

Impact/Purpose:

This abstract is for an oral presentation at a Data Management Symposium at the American Fisheries Society annual meeting in Portland, Oregon in August 16-20, 2015. The abstract provides an overview of the quality assurance processes followed for physical habitat data from streams and rivers in the National Rivers and Streams Assessment (NARS) in 2008-2009. Many states and agencies use NARS data and many collect this type of data independently of EPA. This presentation will aid understanding of the data quality of NARS data, and will help to maintain similar quality in the processing and management of similar data collected and processed by others.

Description:

Appropriate data handling practices are important in the support of large research teams with shifting and competing priorities. Determining those best practices is an ongoing effort for the US EPA’s National Aquatic Resource Surveys. We focus on the well understood data validation process of this program and its still-evolving data sharing process. Both processes rely on version controls at different scales to enhance flexibility and repeatability of analyses and minimize ‘overhead’ activities.
