Description:
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has conducted an HIA at the German Gerena Community School in Springfield, MA. HIA is a six-step systematic process that uses an array of data sources, analytic methods and stakeholder input to determine the potential health effects of a proposed project. An HIA also provides recommendations on monitoring and managing those effects. During the HIA Process, EPA and its contractors did a number of studies on the Gerena School. EPA analyzed the results of the studies and compiled a comprehensive report of the findings. The ultimate goal of the HIA was to provide information to help the City of Springfield to select and prioritize options for renovation and improvement at theGerena School and to focus on those options that will best address environmental problems and enhance health and well-being for the school population.
