Our shared atmosphere

Citation:

Hagler, G. Our shared atmosphere. Consular Presentation, Hong Kong, HONG KONG, October 03 - 04, 2013.

Impact/Purpose:

This presentation is intended to be given to a nontechnical audience in Hong Kong (high school students, business groups), providing an introduction into the science and current issues in the field of air quality and climate.

Description:

Our atmosphere is a precious and fascinating resource, providing air to breath, shielding us from harmful ultraviolet radiation (UV), and maintaining a comfortable climate. Since the industrial revolution, people have significantly altered the composition of the atmosphere through pollution emissions, which range from refrigerants (chlorofluorohydrocarbons – CFCs) destabilizing the UV-protective ozone layer to fine particles aggravating childhood asthma symptoms. These environmental challenges have prompted research into strategies to reduce emissions and protect the atmosphere while maintaining a growing economy. This presentation will provide a brief history and the science behind air quality and climate, as well as touch on some of the major current challenges in the field.
