Yaquina Bay Topobathy DEM

Citation:

Clinton, Pat. Yaquina Bay Topobathy DEM. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC, 2013.

Impact/Purpose:

These data were developed for use in estuarine ecological studies. Prior to the development of this model, very little detailed intertidal bathymetric information existed for Yaquina Bay. In estuaries with large diurnal tidal ranges such as Yaquina Bay, knowledge of bathymetry is critical to the understanding of the distribution of intertidal habitats

Description:

The U.S.EPA contracted with the U.S.ACE to obtain intertidal and subtidal bathymetric soundings of Yaquina Bay between Poole Slough and the South Beach Marina in 2002. These data were compiled with U.S.ACE subtidal soundings from 1999, 1998, 2000 and National Ocean Service soundings from 1953 (1953 - Port Dock area only) and terrestrial elevation data to create the model. Major intertidal channels were digitized from aerial photography acquired at extreme low tide were also used without Z values in the TOPOGRID interpolation as “streams”. Initial iterations of the model exhibited marked anisotropic effects where sounding tracks crossed channels. Models immediately previous to the final iteration were contoured and select contours were generalized and input into the final iteration to smooth the anisotropic effects. An independent total station survey of an intertidal area at extreme low tide was used to evaluate the vertical accuracy of the model generally showing the bathymetry to be accurate +/- 0.25m.
