Regulatory Considerations of Lower Cost Air Pollution Sensor Data Performance

Citation:

Regulatory Considerations of Lower Cost Air Pollution Sensor Data Performance. EM: AIR AND WASTE MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION'S MAGAZINE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGERS. Air & Waste Management Association, Pittsburgh, PA, (August 2014):32 - 37, (2014).

Impact/Purpose:

This article explores the tremendous opportunity EPA has to collect air quality data from low-cost, portable air quality sensors, and the tremendous risk EPA has if the quality of the data that are generated and reported by these sensors is unknown. While regulatory use of these air sensors will likely be limited at best, that is not to say that collecting air monitoring data from sensors is not useful.

Description:

Low-cost, portable air quality sensors could be the next generation of air monitoring, however, this nascent technology is not without risk. This article looks at how the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) uses air monitoring data, the procedures followed to ensure and assess quality, and the ways EPA helps ensure consistent measurements nationally. It also touches on future uses of air sensor data.
