The all income sample was a nationally representative and included about 1,500 women 19 to 50 years in each year and their children 1 to 5 years (about 550 children in each year). A sample of 1,100 men age 19 to 50 years of age was included in 1985 only. The low-i ncome sample was nationally representative and included about 2,100 women in 1985 and about 1,300 women in 1986 and about 1,300 children 1 to 5 years in 1985 and 800 children in 1986. Food intake data were collected on 6 nonconsecutive days at intervals of approximately 2 months over a 1-year period. The first day of intake was collected using an in-person interview; subsequent days of data were collected by telephone when possible. A 1-day dietary recall was used for all intakes.
