Brown, R. AND Mike Borst. Quantifying Evaporation and Evaluating Runoff Estimation Methods in a Permeable Pavement System. Presented at 2014 ASCE-EWRI World Environmental and Water Resources Congress, Portland, OR, June 01 - 05, 2014.

Impact/Purpose:

This presentation quantifies evaporation from a field application of permeable pavement. It also quantifies abstraction by a recently paved impervious hot-mix asphalt parking lot surface and evaluates the accuracy of common runoff estimation methods.

Description:

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency constructed a 0.4-ha parking lot in Edison, New Jersey, that incorporated permeable pavement in the parking lanes which were designed to receive run-on from the impervious hot-mix asphalt driving lanes. Twelve lined permeable pavement sections capture all infiltrating water and route it to collection tanks that can fully contain events up to 38 mm. A water balance approach was used to calculate evaporation from the permeable pavement and abstraction by the impervious hot-mix asphalt. A primary objective of this research was to quantify evaporation for a large-scale field application. A secondary objective was to quantify abstraction from a recently paved impervious hot-mix asphalt parking lot surface and evaluate the accuracy of the following common runoff estimation methods: the discrete Soil Conservation Service Curve Number (SCS-CN) method, the Simple Method (SM), and the Small Storm Hydrology Method (SSHM).
