Impact/Purpose:
During the week of November 18–21, 2013, a team of research scientists from federal, academic, and non-profit research institutions across North America met at the Joseph W. Jones Ecological Research Center in Newton, Georgia to articulate the state of the science, identify needs and future directions for geographically isolated wetland research, and develop immediate and future research collaborations. This workshop summary outlines the key highlights of the workshop, summarizes progress to date, and presents a strategy for advancing the geographically isolated wetlands research identified.
Description:
During the week of November 18–21, 2013, a team of research scientists from federal, academic, and non-profit research institutions across North America met at the Joseph W. Jones Ecological Research Center in Newton, Georgia to articulate the state of the science, identify needs and future directions for geographically isolated wetland research, and develop immediate and future research collaborations. Through a combination of large group discussions and topically-focused subgroups, the team reviewed the current scientific understanding of isolated wetland functions and connectivity, identified potential data gaps, refined and prioritized the key research questions to be addressed, outlined high-priority products (e.g., publications) to be completed in the short term (12–18 months), and identified research projects to be undertaken as longer term (3–5 year) collaborations. Six high-priority publications were identified, and a series of next steps and communication plans developed to ensure continued progress over the next year toward these short-term research products and the longer-term research collaborations forged during the workshop. This workshop summary outlines the key highlights of the workshop, summarizes progress to date, and presents a strategy for advancing the geographically isolated wetlands research identified.
