Impact/Purpose:

This bacterium is very difficult to grow on artificial media and by sequencing its genome we hope to elucidata growth requirements that will helpl us develop a culture-based strategy for detecting it. This species is used as a target for methods detecting waterfowl pollution in environmental waters.

Description:

Catellicoccus marimammalium is a relatively uncharacterized Gram-positive, facultative anaerobe with potential utility as an indicator of waterfowl fecal contamination. Here we report an annotated draft genome sequence that suggests this organism may be a symbiotic gut microbe.
