Nano-materials are emerging in the global marketplace and have remarkable size dependent properties beneficial for science, medicine, engineering and technology. Nanoparticles may constitute a whole new class of non-biodegradable emerging contaminants. The accidentalintroduction of these materials to the environment may pose potential risk and hazard to the environment and public health. Therefore to access these risks, techniques are needed to detect the presence and transport of these nanoparticles in the subsurface. Laboratory column experiments were conducted to investigate the sensitivity of the spectral induced polarization (SIP) method to the presence and transport of nano-Silver (Ag) and nano-zero valent iron (ZVI) with particle diameters of 90-250 nm. The suspensions of these nanoparticles were prepared by mixing the nanoparticles with 0.2% agar solution (adjusted with NaCl to an electrical conductivity of 554 uS/cm and pH of 6.83), shaken for 1 minute, and agitated in a sonication bath for 30 minutes. Quartz sand (mesh 30) was the column porous medium. SIP measurements were obtained between 0.1 to 10000 Hz at 16 equal logarithmic intervals using the dynamic signal analyzer (DSA) National Instruments (NI)- 4461.
