Nitrogen Transformations in Three Types of Permeable Pavement

Citation:

Impact/Purpose:

This poster decribes the response of three different types of permeable pavement surface types for nitrogen.

Description:

In 2009, USEPA constructed a 0.4-ha (1-ac) parking lot at the Edison Environmental Center in Edison, NJ, that incorporated three different permeable pavement types - permeable interlocking concrete pavers (PICP), pervious concrete (PC), and porous asphalt (PA). The driving lanes were paved with traditional impervious hot mix asphalt (HMA). Thirteen rainfall events were sampled about monthly from October 2010 to September 2011. Duplicate samples were collected from each collection tank, at curb cuts draining the impermeable HMA surface, and of collected rain water. The results showed that surface material had a significant effect on TN and NO2-N but no effect on NO3-N. The Friedman ANOVA showed surface material had a significant effect on NH3-N. Post-hoc testing using the Tukey’s Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) method showed no significant differences between TN concentrations from the PICP and PC, but both differed from the PA. Tukey’s HSD showed NO2-N concentrations were significantly different by each surface. NO2-N, NH3-N, and TN concentrations were significantly larger from the PA compared to the PICP and PC. In comparing total nitrogen concentrations in runoff and rain water, it is suspected that the PA material is a source of nitrogen.
